Dorm Room Thanksgiving Ideas
Dorm rooms can get a bit sketchy if you’re spending the holidays on campus. There’s no one to stop impromptu hallway hockey games, let alone prepare a home-cooked meal. If you’re a parent taking online culinary courses, you’ll want to make sure your son or daughter is getting the right kind of nutrition while on break. Give your kid some Thanksgiving food ideas that he or she can make in the dorms. All you’ll need is a Foreman Grill, a microwave and a toaster oven.
Char Siu Turkey Burger
What you’ll need:
- Char siu seasoning
- Mayonnaise
- 1 pound ground pork
- 2 pounds ground turkey
Follow the directions on the Char Siu seasoning package. Combine the ground turkey and pork with a little bit of salt. Mix thoroughly and form into patties. Grill until cooked all the way through
Turkey Slaw
What you’ll need:
- Cabbage
- Scallions
- Cilantro
- Lime Juice
- Mayonnaise
Wash and rinse all the vegetables thoroughly. Shave the cabbage into thin stripes. Dice the scallions and cilantro. Toss the veggies with a tablespoon of mayonnaise and a teaspoon of lime juice.
Tater-Tot-Mac Casserole
What you’ll need:
- 1 bag frozen tater tots
- 1 large box of Easy Mac
- 1 bag of frozen green beans
- 1 box of fried onions
Follow the directions for the tater tots and Easy Mac. Once those two items are prepared, begin rinsing the green beans and boiling water. Place the beans in boiling water for two minutes. Remove the green beans and put them into an ice bath. As the veggies cool, combine the tater tots and Easy mac in a casserole dish. Top the mixture with the green beans and fried onions
Sweet Potatoes with Apples and Cranberries
What you’ll need:
- 1 Granny smith apple
- 2 tablespoons of cranberries
- 2 large sweet potatoes
- 1 tablespoon of cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon of brown sugar
First, dice the apple and sweet potatoes into bite-sized chunks. Then place all the ingredients in a microwaveable, sealable bag. Mix well and shake gently. Microwave for nine minutes or until the potatoes are tender.
Watergate Salad

- 1 cup vanilla low-fat yogurt
- 1 package Jell-O Fat Free Sugar Free Instant Pudding (pistachio flavor)
- 1 can (8 ounces) crushed pineapple in juice, undrained
- Cool Whip

Mix the dry pudding, pineapple and yogurt in a medium-to-large bowl. Whisk all the ingredients until they are blended well. Stir in two or three scoops of Cool Whip. Let the salad cool for an hour and then top it with your favorite fruit or nuts.
