Ridley Scott to direct ‘The Devil in the Kitchen’
The culinary arts are making a big splash in the film world as of late. Highly acclaimed indie films such as “Chef” have brought the food world to the silver screen. In fact, another movie starring Bradley Cooper was about to come out under the same name. The film has since been retitled “Adam Jones”. It is no surprise that Hollywood is starting to take on movies about the cooking world, as food programming on television has been popular for a long time and the nationwide farm-to-table movement is causing droves of Americans to consider the origins of their food. Of course, most good movies start with a good book, and the new film to be directed by Ridley Scott, “The Devil in the Kitchen”, is no exception.
Marco Pierre White
The feature film is based off the memoir written by British celebrity chef Marco Pierre White, titled “The Devil in the Kitchen: Sex, Pain, Madness, and the Making Of a Great Chef”. The book is a passionate tell-all memoir that helped canonize White as the original rock star chef. White is not only the first British chef to ever achieve the coveted ranking of three Michelin stars, but also the youngest chef in the world to do so. White was also the only chef to ever return his Michelin stars. He has been the mentor to now-iconic chefs such as Gordon Ramsay and Mario Batali, both of whom spent time in White’s kitchen. However, Ramsay and White are now famously estranged.
The film
Ridley Scott is the filmmaker behind renowned films such as “Gladiator” and “Blade Runner”. White’s book is known for its unabashed honesty and raw humor, so Scott will be challenged with capturing that on camera. The film looks to cover the story of White’s tumultuous childhood up to his days as the world’s most famous culinary persona. To help him with this task, Scott has teamed up with screenwriter Colet Abedi and actress Giannini Facio. The project is still in the early stages of development, however many culinary enthusiasts are already speculating as to who will be cast to play the various famous chefs. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Russell Crowe is being heavily considered to play the role of White. Other names being tossed into the ring are Orlando Bloom, Clive Owen and Rupert Everett.
