The Ultimate Egg Trick
There’s been a lot of talk in the news lately about sell-by and use-by dates. As it turns out, they’re more guidelines than strict time lines and a lot of people have been throwing out good food. As grocery prices soar all around the country, it’s good to know how you can actually tell if your grub is good to eat or bound for the trash. We can’t help but love this easy trick with eggs! This is how you do it.
Fill up a bowl or pot of water. Make sure there’s enough water in there to cover the eggs and then some. Depending on how many eggs your testing, this should be at least 4-6 inches of water. Then grab your eggs and place them in the water.
Now, the moment of truth. If your eggs go straight to the bottom, they’re still good. If they float, they’re bad. How does this tell anything? Well, eggshells are porous and as they get older, they get thinner and those holes get bigger. Since they’re porous, the older ones will let more air in, causing the eggs to float in the water. The extra air in the eggs will turn those suckers bad faster than you can say omelet.
So, the next time you want to make some homemade mayonnaise and are iffy about your eggs, give this trick a try! This is just one more way you can save yourself some money or a bout of food poisoning to ensure that the food you eat is actually OK to enjoy!
